The most reliable way to confirm the school for a Tehaleh, South Hill, or Bonney Lake home is to check the parcel itself, not the mailing address. Look up the property on the Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer Information Portal to find the resident school district through its tax code area, then use that district's own boundary tool to find the assigned elementary, middle or junior high, and high school. For anything near an edge, call the district and confirm it directly. In all three of these areas, a Bonney Lake or Puyallup mailing address does not, by itself, tell you which district serves the home.

I like walking buyers through this before they write an offer, because it only takes a few minutes and it turns a guess into a confirmed answer. Here is how it works in each area, plus what is changing on the school side over the next few years.

Why doesn't the mailing address tell you the school?

School district lines in Pierce County were drawn long before most of today's neighborhoods existed, and they do not follow ZIP codes or city names. The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District notes that its legal boundary with the Orting School District was established in the late 1800s. Newer communities like Tehaleh were built across lines that are far older than the streets.

The postal address is about mail delivery. The school district is tied to where the parcel sits. That is why two homes a short drive apart, both with the same city on the envelope, can be in different districts with different schools, calendars, bus routes, and enrollment processes.

How do I find the resident school district for a specific address?

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District publishes step-by-step instructions for Tehaleh families that work well for almost any Pierce County address:

  1. Go to the Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer Information Portal and search the house number and street.
  2. Click the matching address. If the property has a unit number, choose that specific unit.
  3. Open the Taxes/Values tab and scroll to History and Receipts.
  4. Click the linked Tax Code Area number.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the districts section to find the listed school district. That is the resident district for the parcel.

Once you know the district, move to that district's own lookup tool to find the specific schools assigned at each grade level. The district answer and the school assignment answer are two separate steps, and you want both.

One caveat worth knowing: Pierce County's own school district map data describes its boundary lines as approximations for general information, and notes that the map and the tax code area data are updated on different schedules. For a home near a boundary, the district office is the final word.

What school district is Tehaleh in?

Tehaleh is served by two school districts. Depending on the individual home, a Tehaleh address can fall within the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District or the Orting School District. The Tehaleh community's own schools page lists both districts, and Sumner-Bonney Lake says on its enrollment page that if you live in Tehaleh, it is possible your home is located within Orting School District boundaries.

On the Sumner-Bonney Lake side, the Tehaleh community page lists Donald Eismann Elementary and Tehaleh Heights Elementary, along with Mountain View Middle School and Bonney Lake High School. On the Orting side, it lists Orting Primary School, Ptarmigan Ridge Elementary, Orting Middle School, and Orting High School. Which set applies depends on the parcel.

New construction adds one more layer. Sumner-Bonney Lake says that as new homes in Tehaleh are built, the district is working to verify the resident district for each individual home. If you are buying a newly built home or a lot that is still under construction, I would run the assessor lookup, ask the builder what they have been told, and call the district to confirm before you rely on any school name in the marketing materials. Sumner-Bonney Lake lists an enrollment contact for Tehaleh questions on that same page.

Can a Tehaleh student in the Orting School District attend Sumner-Bonney Lake schools?

Possibly, but it is not automatic. Sumner-Bonney Lake says families who live outside the district and want to attend there can complete an Inter District waiver and a Choice Transfer Request. Approval depends on the district's process and available space, so I would not buy a home counting on a transfer being approved. If a particular school is the reason you want the home, the safest path is a home whose parcel is already in that district.

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District has also said it is not reviewing its legal boundary with Orting as part of its current boundary work. Changing a boundary between two districts is a separate formal process under Washington law (RCW 28A.315).

Are Tehaleh and Bonney Lake school assignments changing?

Within Sumner-Bonney Lake, yes, at some point. The district's boundary review page says it anticipates new attendance boundaries beginning in fall 2029, when a new middle school in Tehaleh is expected to open. Its published timeline shows community engagement starting in fall 2027 and the School Board adopting final boundaries in spring 2028. The district states that no new attendance boundaries have been decided and that some students may be assigned to a different school when the changes take effect.

For buyers, this means the school assigned to a Bonney Lake or Tehaleh address today may not be the same school a few years from now, especially at the middle school level. If you are buying with a younger child, I would look at today's assignment and keep an eye on the district's updates as that process moves forward.

What school district serves a Bonney Lake address outside Tehaleh?

Most of Bonney Lake is served by the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District, but not all of it. The City of Bonney Lake notes that residents on the east side of the city may be within the White River School District, and residents to the north may be within the Dieringer School District. Dieringer serves preschool through 8th grade and does not operate its own high school, so the high school path for those homes works differently.

If the parcel lookup shows Sumner-Bonney Lake, the district's school attendance boundary maps will help you narrow down the specific elementary, middle, and high school. Bonney Lake has two high schools in this district, Bonney Lake High School and Sumner High School, so it is worth confirming which one the address feeds into rather than assuming it is the one closest to the house.

What school district is South Hill in?

Most South Hill addresses fall within the Puyallup School District, but South Hill sits near district edges, so it is still worth checking. Pierce County's capital facilities summary for the Puyallup School District describes the district as bordered by the Sumner and Orting school districts to the east and the Bethel School District to the south. Homes toward those edges, including areas closer to Frederickson or Graham, are the ones I would double check most carefully.

Once the assessor lookup confirms Puyallup School District, use the district's boundary map tool, linked from its registration page, to find the assigned schools. Puyallup uses a junior high model rather than a traditional middle school setup, so when you look up an address, note the elementary, junior high, and high school, and check which grades each one serves. If the lookup shows Bethel instead, Bethel's maps page links to elementary, middle, and high school boundary maps for the district.

Is the Puyallup School District changing South Hill junior high boundaries?

It is reviewing one. The Puyallup School District has a Boundary Review Committee looking at boundary adjustments between Glacier View Junior High and Ferrucci Junior High. In an October 6, 2026 update, the district said Glacier View is over capacity, Ferrucci has space available, and the committee has identified four options, each involving the Hunt Elementary attendance area, which currently feeds into both junior highs.

The district was clear that no boundary changes have been approved and no final recommendation has been made, and that any changes would take effect beginning with the 2027-2028 school year. If you are looking at a South Hill home in the Hunt Elementary area, or anywhere currently assigned to Glacier View or Ferrucci, I would follow that process closely and ask the district how the options could affect the specific address.

What should I verify before I write an offer?

For every home you are serious about, I like to have four answers written down:

  1. The resident school district from the Pierce County assessor's tax code area.
  2. The assigned elementary, middle or junior high, and high school from the district's own tool.
  3. Whether any boundary review or new school could change those assignments in the next few years.
  4. Confirmation from the district office for any address near an edge, any new construction, or anything that does not line up.

Listing descriptions, portals, builder brochures, and map apps are helpful for a first look, but they are not the final authority on school assignments. I go into the general approach in my post on how to know what school district a house is in, and my guide to school boundaries in Bonney Lake, Auburn, Buckley, and Lake Tapps covers the wider regional picture.

Timing matters too. If schools are a key reason you are choosing a home, confirm the answer before you are under contract. As I explain in my guide to purchase contract contingencies, your options depend on the specific agreement and its deadlines, so I would not assume that a school surprise discovered late gives you a way out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tehaleh in the Sumner-Bonney Lake or Orting School District?

It depends on the individual home. Tehaleh is served by both the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and the Orting School District. Check the parcel's tax code area on the Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer Information Portal, then confirm with the district, especially for new construction.

Does a Bonney Lake mailing address mean Sumner-Bonney Lake schools?

Not always. Most of Bonney Lake is in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District, but the City of Bonney Lake notes that some east side addresses may be in White River and some north side addresses may be in Dieringer. Tehaleh homes can also be in the Orting School District.

Is all of South Hill in the Puyallup School District?

Most South Hill addresses are in the Puyallup School District, but the district borders Bethel to the south and Orting and Sumner-Bonney Lake to the east. Homes near those edges should be checked through the county assessor and confirmed with the district.

Can I trust the school listed on a home listing?

Use it as a starting point, not a final answer. Listing and portal school information can be outdated or based on proximity. The parcel's tax code area and the district's own boundary tool, confirmed with the district office when needed, are much more reliable.

Can school assignments change after I buy?

Yes. Sumner-Bonney Lake expects new attendance boundaries in fall 2029 when a new Tehaleh middle school opens, and Puyallup is reviewing the Glacier View and Ferrucci junior high boundary, with any changes starting in 2027-2028. Neither district has finalized new boundaries.
