How Do I Know What School District a House Is In?

You find a house you love. You look at the map, see the school right down the street and think, perfect. That's where the kids would go.

Maybe. But I wouldn't count on it just yet.

School boundaries don't always follow city limits, ZIP codes or even what seems logical when you're looking at a map. The school closest to the house isn't necessarily the school assigned to that address either.

Bonney Lake is a great example because homes with a Bonney Lake address can fall within Sumner-Bonney Lake, Dieringer or White River School District. If you're moving to the area and don't already know that, it would be really easy to assume a Bonney Lake address automatically means Sumner-Bonney Lake School District.

And it's not just a Bonney Lake thing.

If a particular school or district is important to you, this is one of those times I will always tell you to trust, but verify.

How to Verify the School District for a House

Don't rely solely on the listing, Google, Zillow or even what someone who lives nearby tells you.

Take the actual property address and check it directly with the school district. Most districts have an address or boundary lookup online, and if there's any question, call the district and confirm it.

I'd do this for every house you're seriously considering if the school or district is an important part of your decision. Don't assume the house a few streets over is assigned to the same school, and don't assume the closest school is automatically yours.

I know that sounds like one more thing to research when you're already looking at houses, commute times, childcare, activities and everything else that comes with moving. But if the school is one of the reasons you're choosing the house, it's worth the extra five minutes before you fall in love with it.

Trust, But Verify

This is something I talk about with buyers beyond school districts too. There is a lot of information coming at you when you're buying a house, and some of it matters more to your decision than others.

If there's something that's really important to you, I want you to know where that information came from and, when possible, verify it directly with the source.

For schools, that's the school district.
